Gaba is recruiting for Instructors to teach corporate offsite only lessons in the Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe areas.
Gaba has been conducting offsite lessons away from our Learning Studios for several years. While the vast majority of our operations continue to be 1-to-1 lessons taught at our Learning Studio locations, the offsite lessons program has been growing steadily over the years and Gaba is now one of the leading providers of quality offsite lessons in Japan with over a hundred Instructors signed up to the offsite program.
Until now, our offsite lessons have been provided exclusively by Gaba Instructors who also maintain a contract to teach at our Learning Studios. However, due to the high demand for these lessons and the growth of the program, we have once again have opportunities to join Gaba and teach offsite lessons under an offsite-only contract. Offsite lessons offer the chance for experienced Instructors’ to teach Business English at a client’s workplace, without the need to teach our regular Gaba 1-to-1 lessons at our Learning Studio locations.
OFFSITE Contract Type
Instructor’s teaching offsite lessons with Gaba do so under a Gyomu Itaku (Independent) Contract. As such they are not employees of Gaba, rather they are freelance Instructors who offer their English teaching services to Gaba. The “Master Services” contract that our offsite Instructors sign outlines the relationship of the Instructor with Gaba and basic expectations about their time at Gaba.
Once an Instructor has signed a Gyomu Itaku Master Services contract, they are then considered to be a Gaba Offsite Instructor for the duration of the contract, and can choose to bid on work that Gaba offers to teach our clients. Before submitting a bid, Instructor’s can see the lesson rate, time, frequency and length of contract, as well as any special lesson requests. Gaba offsite Instructors are free to bid whichever work contracts as they choose to do so – there is no obligation to teach a minimum number of hours, nor is there a maximum.
Contract Length & Renewal
The duration of an Offsite Master Services Contract at Gaba is 6 months. These can be extended easily if an Instructor wishes to do so.
ONGOING Support for offsite instructors
Offsite Instructor Support Team
A team of full-time staff dedicated to supporting Instructors in all matters relating to offsite teaching at Gaba. From the initial orientation stage, right through bidding and contract allocation, payment of compensation, lesson observations, and feedback, the staff on the Offsite Instructor Support Team work to support our offsite Instructors every day. For Instructors teaching lessons outside of the team’s operating hours, an out-of-hours number is also available.
IT Systems Support
Gaba Offsite Instructors benefit from the sizable infrastructure that Gaba has built up to support our operations company-wide. Offsite Instructors are able to login to the “Gabaweb for Instructors” website, which is their online portal to a wealth of information about the company including access to all our learning materials, and other important information. Everything on this site is provided in English.
Furthermore, Gaba provides each of our offsite Instructors with an iPad for teaching offsite lessons, which forms an integral part of how offsite lessons are taught at Gaba. The iPad will contain all the learning materials Instructors need as well as allowing them access to the internet during the lesson should they wish to use something from the web during their lessons.
Learning Materials
Offsite lessons are taught using Gaba’s in-house curriculum. With over 800 lessons developed there is a huge variety of materials ready to support our offsite Instructors. In addition, Gaba’s Academic Development team often work to create customised material for particular client’s or lessons, meaning that our Instructors benefit from a great deal of support in terms of materials.
Gaba’s learning materials are divided into 10 ability levels, covering beginner through to advanced. The depth of the curriculum means that we can target level-appropriate materials to clients, matching their ability level closely.
Certification & Lesson Observations
Initial Certification & OJC
Before starting to teach offsite lessons, we offer 2 full days of certification to get offsite Instructors ready for delivering high-quality lessons using the Gaba method. The first of these days focuses on group teaching core skills and the second on the particular demands of teaching offsite lessons. Once these two day have been successfully completed, new Instructors can start bidding on contracts to teach offsite lessons with Gaba.
OJC is a 2~3 hour session conducted after successful completion of certification. The OJC session focuses on specific practical knowledge of our support and IT systems for teaching offsite lessons at Gaba.
Follow-up Certification
After a few months have passed and the new offsite Instructor has started to teach lessons, we will invite them back to participate in a day of follow-up certification. The purpose of this session is to further develop the Instructor’s skills with the benefit of having taught offsite lessons for several months with Gaba.
Observations & Feedback
Offsite Support staff conduct regular lesson observations for all offsite Instructors and are able to offer constructive advice and feedback afterwards. Client companies will usually provide feedback about how the lessons are going directly to Gaba rather than to the Instructor, so these sessions are a great chance for our support staff to work with Instructors to make sure that the best lessons are being taught and the client’s needs are being met.
